INVESTING IN THE WORKS OF SALVADOR DALI

The etchings, wood engravings and lithographs of Salvador Dali provide the average investor the means to participate in the lucrative art market. Salvador Dali is arguably one of the best known artists in history. His prolific works on paper are the personification of his genius and will remain in huge demand by the investing public. There are several reasons why the works of Dali represent great investment value.

His works on paper are well documented in “The Official Catalog of the Graphic Works of Salvador Dali” by Albert Fields. This volume will show in detail the number of works in an edition, the size of the image and valuable details to cross reference the items. Also included is a chapter on “Afters” and how to identify fakes. The Salvador Dali Archives remains available in New York to authenticate a print for the fee of $250.
The proposed retail value of any of the printed works is catalogued in “The Price Guide to the Graphic Works of Salvador Dali” by Bruce Hochman. Prices are revised on a regular basis and provide an accurate estimate of value for any item on paper. This price guide is cross referenced with the Fields Catalog for ease of research. I am not aware of any definitive price guide for the works of a major artist other than Salvador Dali.

Most appraisals involve a subjective process where auction results are compared with the item to be appraised. Size, type of image and conditions is taken into consideration to arrive at a value. The Hochman price guide takes the subjective process out of the appraisal by clearly defining a value for the item. As the price guide is adjusted in future years, the appraised value of the item will increase with the values in the price guide. While there is no sure thing, investing in Salvador Dali works of art can be enjoyable and financially rewarding.

A SPECIAL EXHIBIT FEATURING THE PRINTED WORKS OF SALVADOR DALI WILL BE ON PERMANENT DISPLAY
